Damien Hirst– Treasures from the Wreck of the Unbelievable

"Full fathom five thy father lies;

Of his bones are coral made;

Those are pearls that were his eyes:

Nothing of him that doth fade,

But doth suffer a sea-change

Into something rich and strange."

William Shakespeare,

The Tempest

他的眼睛是耀眼的明珠;

"Treasures from the Wreck of the Unbelievable"

Hirst说“The thing that makes art is that it’s much closer to religion . . . It locks into belief in some way.” “It’s all about what you want to believe.”

这些金币,珠宝,“古”董,他讨论 ambiguity,模棱两可— is it old or made yesterday? Real or make believe? 是真的,还是让你信以为真的?truth and illusion, historical fact and myth, scepticism and faith (真实或幻想,历史事实或神话,怀疑论或信仰)。

Myvenicephotography46Each of the works in the show is made in an edition of three, one made to look like it is a treasure just dredged from the deep (a “Coral,” in Hirst’s parlance); another made to look like the salvaged relic restored for display by modern-day curators (a “Treasure”); and a third which is presented as a reproduction of the pseudo-historical object (a “Copy”).

Unbelievable!

"A sphinx reclined in the sand, butterflyfish sheltering in her lee. I hovered, transfixed, until the professional divers motioned that we should swim on. "

Hirst

For the Love of God,他对外宣称以1亿美元卖给一个匿名买家。 David Lee, editor of The Jackdaw, commented "Everyone in the art world knows Hirst hasn't sold the skull. It's clearly just an elaborate ruse to drum up publicity and rewrite the book value of all his other work."

“It’s a giant financial gamble for art’s king of controversy, who is trying for a comeback.” –NY Times

Myvenicephotography35The Severed Head of Medusa, Malachite

“Of course any fake created in the first or second century would have matured by degrees into a curiosity and eventually an antiquity, acquiring significant value.”

“Hirst has always demonstrated that art is about ideas as well as aesthetics; that art is fabrication, a lie that by provoking us to think may bring us closer to the truth.”

–Financial Times

“The obsession with narrative and storytelling, at the expense of any real feeling for the object; the insistence on immature make-believe: it’s all unbelievably retrograde.”

Jason deCaires Taylor

Jason deCaires Taylor.
